Dundee United seal Scottish Championship title as Airdrieonians stalemate rubber stamps promotion

Dundee United have officially been crowned as the winners of the cinch Championship aftertheir 0-0 draw with Airdrie.

Although they went into the game six points clear of second placed Raith Rovers, the Tangerines knew that avoiding a defeat in North Lanarkshire would be enough to mathematically clinch their return to the Scottish Premiership with one game still to play. The win over Ayr last weekend all-but sealed the trophy - with Ian Murray's men requiring a 36-goal swing and United to lose their final two games to catch their rivals.

Jim Goodwin's men started the campaign as heavy favourites to earn automatic promotion, with high profile signings Louis Moult, Declan Gallagher and Kevin Holt brought in to help secure an immediate return to the top-flight following relegation from last season. Former Motherwell striker Moult's 17 Championship strikes have been central to that success, with ex-Celtic man Tony Watt also chipping in with 12 goals.

On the night, it was Luton Town loanee Jack Walton that was the hero for United. The goalkeeper made a series of saves to deny Gabby McGill and Arron Lyall to keep the game goalless and secure the vital point to get his side over the line. United will get the chance to parade their league trophy in front of their supporters at Tannadice next Friday when they host Partick Thistle in Tayside.
