Dumfries and Galloway curlers win Co-op Canadian Open

Dumfries and Galloway’s curlers enjoyed grand slam success in Canada.

Stranraer pair Hammy McMillan and Bobby Lammie, along with Kirkgunzeon’s Grant Hardie and skip Bruce Mouat, lifted the Co-op Canadian Open at the Servus Arena in Red Deer, Alberta.

They claimed the trophy after defeating the rink of Calgary’s Brendan Bottcher 6-5 in the final on Sunday.

As well as meaning Mouat has won all four majors in the Grand Slam of Curling, it was a third triumph for Hardie and a second for McMillan and Lammie.

It was a fantastic week for the rink as they won all seven of their games, which included a semi-final win over the rink of Dumfries’ Ross Whyte.

Hardie said: “As much as winning the tour events are amazing, everyone knows there are a lot more eyeballs on the slams.

“It’s the top 15 teams, 16 teams and brilliant ice conditions. It means everything to be able to win it and as I said, hopefully, we can keep going and competing in a few more rather than missing playoffs like we did last year.”

The reigning world champions will be back home for the Scottish championships, which begin on February 4.
