Dover Athletic sign former Manchester United and Gillingham forward Lee Martin after his release from Ebbsfleet United

Dover have bolstered their attacking options, signing a former Manchester United and Gillingham man.

Lee Martin was released by rivals Ebbsfleet in May and has signed ahead of Whites’ opening pre-season friendly at home to Gillingham on Saturday.

The 35-year-old made 15 starts and 15 substitute appearances for the Fleet last term, including a brief outing off the bench in the National League South play-off final defeat at Dorking Wanderers, having scored as they beat Chippenham in the play-off semi-final.

“He brings an extra bit of experience,” said Dover boss Andy Hessenthaler who is also hoping to retain the services of full-back Myles Judd.

“He can play right across the frontline and in wide areas. He has moved to Whitstable, and he wants to do three mornings.

“I know Lee, he played with my son [Jake] at Gills. He will be up there with all the running sessions.

“So I think he will be good for us.”

Martin started his professional career with Manchester United and was one of seven Gillingham players to be told they won’t be receiving a new contract in May 2018 while Jake Hessenthaler - now with Crawley - also headed for the exit door at Priestfield.

Whites have also got other attacking options in strikers Alfie Pavey, Reece Grant, Noah Carney and George Nikaj while Luke Wanadio and Arjanit Krasniqi will help provide width.
