Donegal stalwart Neil McGee retires aged 37

All-Ireland winning Donegal defender Neil McGee has announced his retirement from inter-county football at the age of 37.

McGee, a key member of the 2012 All-Ireland winning team, confirmed his decision in an interview with the Donegal News this morning, citing back injuries and general wear and tear on his body as the reason for his departure.

"The body just doesn't have anything left to give," he said. "I thought long and hard about last year, going back I mean. And with Declan (Bonner) staying on, I decided to give it one more shot.

"But with the back playing up like it did after that injury the season before, I just didn’t feature like I would have wanted. So it was a much easier decision this time around.

"What ever is left in the tank now I intend to give it all to Gaoth Dobhair. I missed so much there over the years because of what we were trying to achieve with Donegal."

McGee, who made his senior debut in 2005, was a central figure in Donegal's rise under Jim McGuinness in the 2010s, operating alongside brother Eamonn in the full-back line for much of the period.

In total, McGee won five Ulster titles between 2011 and 2019, alongside the famous All-Ireland triumph in 2012. Individually, he collected three All-Star awards, in 2011, 2012 and 2014.

At club level, he was full-back on the Gaoth Dobhair that won the Ulster crown in 2018, the first Donegal side to do so.
