Don Robertson slammed over Rangers no goal as stunned former ref points to double whammy VAR call

Steve Conroy has hammered VAR official Alan Muir and referee Don Robertson for their failure not to stick with their original goal decision during Rangers' defeat to Celtic.

Brendan Rodgers' patched-up defence managed to shut out Michael Beale's revamped forward line as a the boos rang out at Ibrox after Kyogo's goal on the stroke of half-time sealed a 1-0 defeat. But beforehand, Kemar Roofe thought he had fired his team in front off a Cyriel Dessers cutback, but the Rangers striker was deemed to have fouled Celtic's Gustaf Lagerbielke in the build-up.

It's resulted in mass debate and former ref Conroy tells ShareMarketCap that Robertson should have trusted his gut as VAR was put in his critical sights. He explained: “I don’t see where the foul is. Don was right with his first instinct, and it shouldn’t have been overturned. As we have said before, not all contact is a foul.

“This was not a clear and obvious error - a disputed situation yes, but no clear and obvious error – and that’s the criteria for asking a ref to look at an incident on the monitor. So, it’s a double whammy. Alan Muir should not have called for Don to look at it again and subsequently Don should not have overturned his original decision.”
