Derek McInnes rages at VAR as boss vents on red card escapes that went 'way beyond' Kilmarnock punishments

Raging Derek McInnes has slammed the inconsistency of VAR as the Kilmarnock boss claimed the calls are driving managers "mad".

It was a controversial weekend for referees and VAR teams across the Scottish Premiership - with the Ayrshire side awaiting the results of an appeal to the SFA over Lewis Mayo's red card against Dundee. The defender was sent off following his challenge on Scott Tiffoney - which allowed Luke McCowan to step up and score from the spot in the 2-2 draw.

Alongside McInnes, both Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers and Rangers gaffer Philippe Clement were left irked by calls during defeats to Hearts and Motherwell respectively. The Hoops' boss was left reeling over a red card for Yang at Tynecastle - with the Scottish champions also waiting for the outcome of an appeal - as well as the decision to punish Tomoki Iwata for handball. Clement reckons that 'Well match-winner Dan Casey should have been shown a red following a heavy tackle on Ross McCausland.

Speaking about the performance of VAR and match officials, McInnes said: "There have been a lot of instances. We’ve had similarities to a lot of the issues going on. There were some tackles this weekend which went way beyond what my player Corrie NDaba was sent off for a few weeks ago when the referee was asked to come to the monitor.

"With the criteria I was told by the refereeing department, there were a lot of things happening at the weekend where you think ‘why are there not more red cards’? The inconsistency of it all is driving us all mad, it really is."
