Derek McInnes backs Barry Robson to ride out Aberdeen storm as it's 'ridiculous' to even think about sacking him

Derek McInnes has backed Barry Robson to ride out the storm and get Aberdeen back up the table.

The Kilmarnock boss heaped pressure on his old club with Wednesday’s stoppage time winner at Pittodrie - thanks to David Watson’s goal. It led to sections of the Aberdeen support chanting for Robson to go and they then turned on their manager and players as they slipped to 11th in the league.

Former Aberdeen boss McInnes stated: “He has done a good job here. He is in good hands and he will be absolutely fine. We all need results. We have already seen four people lose their jobs. For me, it is ridiculous to even think that. He has done so well. He is a young manager and did terrific last season.” Robson cut his coaching teeth under McInnes at Aberdeen. Robson led the team to third last season, guaranteed group stage football and a Viaplay Cup Final, where they play Rangers later this month.

McInnes believes the current situation will be an eye-opener for a lot of the newly-built Dons squad. The Kilmarnock boss stated: “There has been a lot of investment and there are a lot of good players in that Aberdeen team.

“A lot will be realising what it takes and the demands on players here. He has done well before and will continue to do well. Unfortunately for him, me and every other manager out there it comes with the territory. If you don’t win games you come under scrutiny.

“He has a good enough squad and is a good enough manager to come through this to get the team going again.”

Robson also has a backer in Stefan Gartenmann. He rates Robson as one of the best managers he has worked under and is in no doubt he will turn Aberdeen’s ailing Premiership fortunes around.
