Derby County academy product completes transfer to League One rivals

Former Derby County winger Morgan Whittaker has joined Plymouth Argyle on a season-long loan from Championship side Swansea City.

Whittaker completed his medical and the paperwork ahead of the move to Home Park yesterday and becomes the club's fifth summer signing. The 21-year-old arrived at Argyle having spent time on loan at Lincoln City last season, scoring five goals in 20 appearances.

He is now set to feature for Plymouth in their pre-season friendly against Yeovil having been handed the number 19 shirt. Argyle boss Steven Schumacher said he was thrilled to land the 21-year-old and feels he will bring versatility to the squad.

“I am delighted that we have signed Morgan on loan from Swansea,” said Argyle manager Steven Schumacher. “Morgan is a very talented young player, who can play either in a front three, or as a striker in a front two. He is left-footed and will bring another quality option to our attacking line this season.

“I’m sure our fans are going to be excited to watch him play, as much as we are excited to work with and coach him every day.”

Whittaker's move to Plymouth means he will face Derby next season, having started his career at his hometown club. He made 32 appearances having come through the Rams' academy but left at the end of the January 2021 transfer window to join Swansea in a deal thought to be worth around £700,000. He has made 22 appearances at the Liberty Stadium. He will come face to face with his former employers on September 3 when Plymouth are the visitors to Pride Park.
