Denzel Dumfries responds to transfer links amid Manchester United 'interest'

Denzel Dumfries says he is “flattered” that clubs such as Manchester United are being linked with interest in him, but recommitted his future to Inter Milan.

United are expected to dip into the market for a right-back in January with Aaron Wan-Bissaka not seen as ample backup for Diogo Dalot. Dalot himself has grown his game under Erik ten Hag, starting every match and registering two assists after recording none last season.

He grabbed his first goals for Portugal in their 4-0 Nations League win on Saturday, firing home a brace. The 23-year-old is making it hard for anyone to argue he is undeserving of his palace in the side.

Nevertheless, Ten Hag will be keen to ensure Dalot has competition in his position, as he has done all over the pitch, perhaps barring goalkeeper. United were interested in Sergino Dest in the week leading up to deadline day but a loan agreement couldn’t be met and he moved to AC Milan.

The USA international remained on the bench as he watched his side record a 3-2 win over Dumfries’ Inter earlier this month. The Dutchman had been linked with a switch to United throughout the latter part of the summer, although no bid was ever tabled.

It comes as a surprise to no-one that Chelsea were also linked with the defender, who is an integral part of Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands team and is a dead cert to travel to Qatar. Dumfries made a £12m switch from PSV Eindhoven to Italy in the summer of 2021 and registered five goals and seven assists.

He’s scored two already this term and notched a further two assists, one of which came in Thursday’s 2-0 Netherlands win over Poland, as Inter try and reclaim the Serie A
