David De Gea Makes 'Curse' Claim When Asked Why Man United Have Struggled Since Sir Alex Ferguson's Retirement

The Red Devils fell short in their bid to win the Europa League last season, losing a penalty shootout to Villarreal.

This season, Ralf Rangnick's team only have the chance to win the Champions League, having been knocked out of the FA Cup by Championship side Middlesbrough.

Why have Man United failed to compete for trophies since Sir Alex's retirement? Well, De Gea joked that his side has been 'cursed'.

"People always ask me and we talk about it as team-mates and we just say 'we don't know what's happening.'"

He continued: "We should have competed for more trophies, bigger titles, but I just don't know why this team doesn't function.

"I don't know if that's a good thing [save stats]. Teams create a lot of chances against us. But that's what I'm here for: trying to stop goals, help the team however I can and this year things are going well in that regard."

De Gea was a part of Man United's Premier League-winning squad back in the 2012/13 season.

He's helped his team win the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League since their last league title triumph.

But they've failed to win another league title or Champions League since 2013.

They could still claim European glory this term, with De Gea and Co still in Europe's main competition as they face Atletico Madrid in the next round.
