David de Gea has already reassured Manchester United fans on his future after latest contract claim

Manchester United fans may be concerned by reports that David de Gea has rejected a new contract offer but the 32-year-old remains hopeful both he and the club can come to an agreement.

De Gea has entered the final months of a four-year deal that has seen him earn £375,000 per week since 2019, and although talks are thought to have been underway for some time little progress had been made up until recently. United have the option to extend the Spaniard's contract for a further season, although that would mean maintaining his huge wages - something they are wanting to avoid.

As such, talks over a new deal on reduced wages have been mooted by the club and seemingly accepted by De Gea, whose current salary has him as the joint highest earner in the Premier League alongside Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne.

The Athletic reported on Wednesday that United's opening offer had been rejected by the Spaniard, but made effort to point out that rarely is a first offer accepted - the recent stalling merely a case of negotiating the numbers rather than anything more concerning.

Asked about the talks and his future back in February, De Gea's short but telling response will continue to reassure those who want the veteran to stay.

"We’re still talking," he admitted after the 2-1 win against Crystal Palace. "I’m just focused on the game, that’s the most important thing, but for sure it’s going to end in a good way."

Reds boss Erik ten Hag is said to be keen on keeping De Gea at Old Trafford, despite the recent admission that he 'cannot ignore' the Spaniard's issues in possession, after their 4-1 Europa League win over Real Betis earlier this month.
