Darvel Junior Cup Final hero admits he was RANK ROTTEN despite glory double to complete dramatic comeback
Graham Wilson hit a Darvel double to seal the Ayrshiremen a first Scottish Junior Cup triumph in their 135-year history - then admitted he was RANK ROTTEN.
Wilson’s second half brace at Broadwood saw David Winters’ side fight back from going behind to Scott Anson’s 50th minute opener for Arthurlie. His 88th minute winner means it’s now a sixth Junior Cup winners’ medals for the former Auchinleck Talbot striker. But he said: “Scoring the two goals and winning the game was special. But, to be honest, myself and the team weren’t good .. I was rank rotten! I’ll take that though. I’d rather be rotten and score two goals than be going home without the cup.
"I don’t think anyone really expected us to get to the final. We’ve probably overachieved by winning the West of Scotland Cup too. Two trophies is magic. We’ve had setbacks all season but fought back. Today was like that after losing the opening goal. The boys have got on with it. Now we’ve made history, it’s a special occasion.”
With the Ayrshire village set to party Wilson joked he’d lock down team mate Stephen Bronsky who is due on an early morning flight back to a family holiday in Gran Canaria. Former Elgin and Dumbarton defender Bronsky flew home from the Canaries on Friday to make sure he didn’t miss the big occasion.
Wilson joked: “Bronsky’s flight is quarter to six in the morning. He’s a sensible man .. but we’ll try and hold him back! Fair play to the big man that was some effort to help us today. He was brilliant. It’s going to be some party back in Ayrshire. I’m just delighted for the fans and the club.”
Vale had only ever been to the final once in their 135-year history, that coming in 1976 when they lost 3-0 to Bo’ness United in front of 20,000 at Hampden.
