Darren Gleeson set to be confirmed as new Laois hurling boss

Darren Gleeson is poised to be announced as the new manager of the Laois senior hurling team.

RTÉ Sport has confirmed that, subject to ratification, Gleeson will replace his fellow Tipperary man, Willie Maher, as the boss of the O'Moore County.

Gleeson only recently stepped down as manager of the Antrim senior hurling team.

During his time in charge of the Saffrons, the Portroe clubman guided Antrim to two Joe McDonagh Cup victories in 2020 and 2022. They also landed a Division 2 League title in 2020 and have remained in the top flight since.

This year, Antrim secured Leinster senior hurling championship status for a further season, drawing with Wexford and beating Carlow in the round robin stage.

Following that successful stint up north, initially as a coach before becoming manager in 2018, Portroe man Gleeson now links up with Laois who lost the Joe MacDonagh Cup final to Offaly earlier this summer.

His name was put forward at a county executive meeting tonight and the appointment is subject to ratification by club delegates at the upcoming county committee meeting.

During his time as a player Gleeson won two All-Irelands, six Munster Championships, and one Allianz Hurling League with the Premier County during 10 years on the Tipperary senior hurling panel.

He is still playing in goal for his club in the Tipperary intermediate championship.
