Malachy O'Rourke confirmed as new Tyrone football manager

Malachy O'Rourke has been confirmed as the new manager of the Tyrone footballers on a three-year term following a meeting of the county board this evening.

O'Rourke previously took charge of both the Fermanagh and Monaghan sides, guiding the Farney to the All-Ireland semi-finals in 2018, where they lost out to the county that he's set to take over.

He also led Monaghan to two Ulster titles in his stint with the county, while also securing back-to-back promotions in 2013 and 2014 as the county began a ten-year stint in the top flight.

Following his departure from Monaghan, O'Rourke was appointed manager of Watty Graham's in Derry, guiding them to three county titles and two Ulsters, before claiming the ultimate prize with an All-Ireland triumph in January.

O'Rourke will take over from the outgoing pair of Brian Dooher and Feargal Logan, who confirmed their decision to step away last month.

They brought Sam Maguire success to the Red Hand county in 2021, defeating Mayo in the final, but the form of the side dropped considerably in the following three seasons as Tyrone only once managed to get as far as the quarter-finals.

O'Rourke will be tasked with bringing some of the successful underage crop of players, who tasted All-Ireland Under-20 success this year, as well as in 2022, into the senior fold as the Red Hand look to get back to the top table.
