Danny Walker comes out swinging in defence of Warrington Wolves' Super League title hopes

Danny Walker is adamant Warrington Wolves still have enough to challenge for Betfred Super League this year - even though their progress has been thwarted again. After another disappointing defeat, they will be working hard on the training field with no game until Saturday week in Perpignan.

Daryl Powell’s side had arrested their alarming five-game losing run with two wins out of three over Easter, beating Salford and Huddersfield. But it seemed like they took a backward step when being handed another lesson by high-flying Wigan on Friday.

Embarrassed Warrington were 40-10 down before late Walker and Pete Mata’utia tries clawed back a modicum of respectability in a 40-22 defeat. It was a sixth defeat from 11 league outings since ex-Castleford boss Powell took charge and they were also dumped out of the Challenge Cup at home to Wakefield.

Hooker Walker said: “I wasn’t on for the first half hour or so but a few of the lads said it was a really fast and really tough start to the game. We just weren’t quite there in that first period. We were off that little bit and Wigan just took advantage of that. Fair play to them.

“We have shown a bit of progress over the last couple of weeks but we know we’re not quite where we need to be. Wigan are going alright this year and we know where we need to get to and what we need to do to get to that level ourselves.

“It’s going to take a little time with a new coaching staff and a few new players but we know what we’ve got inside the sheds and that we can do it. It’s just about staying together as a collective now and getting the job done.”
