Josh Charnley to depart Warrington Wolves at the end of the season
Josh Charnley will become a free agent at the end of the season after Daryl Powell confirmed Warrington Wolves will not be offering him a new contract. The winger is one of the most prolific try-scorers in Super League history, currently sitting third in the all-time charts.
But he will be on the hunt for a new club in 2023 after Powell confirmed in his pre-match press conference on Wednesday morning that they will not be offering him a new contract beyond this season.
Clubs in Super League and the Championship have already been offered Charnley's services, Rugby League Live understands, and the prospect of him returning to rugby union is slim.
Warrington Wolves star Josh Charnley drops a huge hint on his future
But his time at Warrington is set to come to an end just days after he posted a cryptic update on social media coyly suggesting he would be on the move and asking what was next, before tagging his management company, Distinct, in the post.
When asked about Charnley's future by Love Rugby League, Powell simply said: “He won’t be offered a contract for next year.”
Warrington are expected to undergo a significant overhaul to their squad for 2023 as Powell begins to put his stamp on the club. Props Gil Dudson and Sam Kasiano are heading for the Halliwell Jones Stadium, a story first revealed by Rugby League Live.
Reports overnight in Australia have suggested prop Thomas Mikaele is also moving to Super League to sign for the Wire, while long-serving prop Mike Cooper is expected to depart, with several Super League clubs monitoring his availability.
And it seems like another big name will be following Cooper out of the door, with Charnley being told he will not be offered a new contract.
