Danny Blind explains why he turned down Manchester United job offer

Ajax legend and 1995 Champions League winner Danny Blind has revealed why he turned down the opportunity to become a coach at Manchester United under Louis van Gaal.

Van Gaal led United between 2014 and 2016, ending his tenure with an FA Cup trophy lift before being replaced by Jose Mourinho. His stay at Old Trafford has been judged as underwhelming albeit hardly boring.

In his first summer, he brought in eight players including Angel Di Maria, Victor Valdes, Radamel Falcao and Luke Shaw. Among that cohort was Netherlands defender Daley Blind, the son of Danny.

He ultimately went on to tally 141 appearances in his four-year spell, lifting the 2017 League Cup and Europa League - United’s last trophies until February’s Carabao Cup triumph under countryman Erik ten Hag.

Earlier in his maiden summer, Van Gaal approached Blind Snr to ask him to become one of his coaches at Old Trafford. However, the now-62-year-old turned down the proposal and has now explained why.

"I’d love to have worked at Manchester United alongside Louis, but I knew he was going to sign my son, Daley,” he told FourFourTwo.

"It didn’t seem wise to me as a father to coach him every single day. I was also told at the time that the Dutch federation wanted me to be the assistant to Guus Hiddink, and then later to take over as the national coach myself."
