The 'incredible' Manchester United signing who is now proving Erik ten Hag and Pep Guardiola right

It was another dispiriting night for Erik ten Hag's marquee signing on Wednesday, but while the struggles of Antony continue to be a major problem to Manchester United another new addition is starting to make his presence felt.

Antony was taken off to chants of "what a waste of money" for the second time in two months at the City Ground and his only route into the team for Sunday's derby at the Etihad is via injuries, of which there are still plenty. He has one goal and one assist in 27 appearances this season, both against League Two Newport County.

But while Antony struggled in Nottingham, it was another encouraging performance for Andre Onana, who made five saves in the FA Cup fifth-round win and once again kept his team in the game. It was the seventh successive game for United where Onana has made at least three saves, including making eight in the win at Aston Villa.

United's form in 2024 has improved, but it has felt like the main reason for that is Onana has been making saves and Rasmus Hojlund has been scoring goals, two things that weren't happening often enough in the first few months of the season. Ten Hag deserves credit for those signings, even if paying £72million to make Hojlund the centrepiece of the attack always came with risks and contributed to the slow start to the season. In committing £47million to sign Onana, he was on safer ground.
