Cristiano Ronaldo's 'Shopee' advert in 2019 is still terrible
It’s fair to say that Cristiano Ronaldo has used his success on the football pitch to great effect.
The Manchester United and Portugal star is a money-making machine, becoming the first active team-sport athlete to surpass $1 billion in career earnings in 2020.
That’s according to Forbes, who had the 37-year-old third in their list of the highest-paid athletes in 2021 after earning a cool $120m.
Ronaldo has a lifetime deal with Nike and also profits from his CR7-branded clothing, accessories, hotels and gyms.
Then there’s Instagram. According to The Guardian, Ronaldo can command as much as $1.6m per post to endorse a product on the social medial giant, more than anyone else in the world.
The sums of money are simply eye-watering. It’s not wrong to think that Ronaldo’s grandkids’ grandkids will enjoy a nice lifestyle thanks to the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
But however much Ronaldo was paid to feature in an advert for Singapore-based e-commerce platform Shopee in 2019, it simply wasn’t worth it.
The advert went viral at the time and Shopee probably didn’t mind the reaction to it. There’s no such thing as bad publicity, as they say.
Shopee signed Ronaldo up as an ambassador and as part of the deal, he agreed to appear in an ad that involved a cringeworthy dance set to the tune of ‘Baby Shark’ about the company’s ’Super Shopping Day’.
Nah I refuse to believe that Cristiano Ronaldo agreed to do this
