Cristiano Ronaldo's Liverpool applause: Peter Drury's beautiful commentary

Liverpool and Manchester United fans performed a wonderful gesture for Cristiano Ronaldo and his family after they lost their baby boy at birth.

Twenty four hours previously, the Portuguese star shared the devasting news on social media.

In a statement, he wrote: “It is with our deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our baby boy. It’s the greatest pain any parent can feel. Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.

“We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support. We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time. Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you. Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez.”

Understandably, Ronaldo wasn’t included in the squad to face Liverpool.

However, if he was watching, he would have seen an incredible gesture from the entirety of Anfield in the seventh minute.

When it ticked over to the minute of Ronaldo’s famous shirt number, everyone inside the stadium rose to their feet and applauded before a chorus of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ broke out. No matter your allegiances, it was an emotional moment.

And there was one man for the occasion – Peter Drury.

Often regarded as the ‘Poet of Football’, Drury just knows the right words to say at the right time.

And he did it once again on Tuesday night.
