Cristiano Ronaldo, Frenkie de Jong and exits — Manchester United's remaining transfer to-do list

It has been slow going, but at long last Erik ten Hag's squad is starting to take shape.

June was a meagre month full of speculation but ultimately without any action — the first time since 2010 in which Manchester United failed to make a signing in the month. It certainly wasn't a bright start for the supposed rebuild.

But just a few weeks later and things are beginning to look a lot rosier. It helps that Ten Hag looks to have already made an impact on the players with galvanising displays in pre-season, as well as three new bodies coming through the door. Left-back Tyrell Malacia was the first new arrival with Christian Eriksen coming next as the brilliant midfielder joined on a free transfer after leaving Brentford.

The Dane was swiftly followed by the announcement that a £46.8million, rising to £55.3m, deal has been agreed with Ajax for Lisandro Martinez. The versatile defender will sign a five-year contract at Old Trafford, though the deal remains subject to medical, visa and the agreement of terms.

With those three additions, United's squad is already looking stronger, with more technical quality, but there are more problems to be resolved before the window closes on September 1.

Ronaldo situation

The biggest problem United need to resolve is what they do with Cristiano Ronaldo. There has been a lack of movement in either direction since the No.7 made it clear he wants to leave the club and then didn't travel on the pre-season tour due to family reasons amid the uncertainty.
