Conte almost left Juventus for Manchester United in his playing career

Antonio Conte has revealed he almost joined Manchester United - but as a player rather than manager.

Conte, linked with the United job before Tottenham appointed him, explained how close he came to earning a chance to see if he could cut it in England during his career after hailing fit-again defender Cristian Romero’s suitability for the Premier League.

Former Juventus midfielder Conte said: ‘In the past I would have liked to play in the Premier League. I tried to get this experience.

‘I know that Alex Ferguson liked my football. In the past it was a moment that maybe Manchester United wanted to bring me there.

‘My agent told me this but I don’t know if this is a lie or the truth!’

Romero, who Conte confirmed will join permanently in the summer, returned for Saturday’s FA Cup win against Brighton.

Wednesday's game against Southampton will be just the Argentina defender’s second league appearance under Conte after suffering a serious hamstring injury while on international duty in November.

‘He’s a new signing for me,’ Conte said. ‘And I like him. He is perfect for this league. 

'If you can play in this league you can play in all the leagues in the world because the intensity, the quality, the physicality here is not present in other leagues.’

Meanwhile, Ralph Hasenhuttl insists his priority is doing well enough to remain Southampton manager until 2024 after raising the prospect of quitting coaching for good at the end of his contract.

Hasenhuttl told German publication Kicker of his plans this week. He suggested the decision is not yet cut and dried and his mind could possibly be changed.
