Conor McGregor warned fourth fight with rival Dustin Poirier would be "weird"

Conor McGregor has been warned that pursuing a fourth fight with heated rival Dustin Poirier would result in a "weird" event.

UFC legend Chael Sonnen was discussing McGregor's next options when he noted that while there is a story to be told between the pair, it's a tougher sell given McGregor was stopped twice in a row.

McGregor was cleanly knocked out in their rematch last January at UFC 257, before the slightly more controversial UFC 264 ending which saw him cleanly break his leg while stepping back from a kick.

“Poirier vs Conor works," Sonnen said in a YouTube video. "I understand that but part four is a little weird.

"Particularly when two and three didn’t have a single round won by Conor, it was very uncompetitive.”

It remains to be seen if the Irishman will be granted his wish against Poirier, and with both men currently walking around well over 180lb, would they want to cut to lightweight or do it at a third limit.

Their first meeting was at featherweight in 2014, which McGregor won within minutes, before they reignited their feud last year at lightweight.

McGregor has a history at welterweight in the promotion, while Poirier has flirted with making a move up after losing his two efforts at the undisputed lightweight title.

“Conor’s got to give us a little more info too," Sonnen continued. " He’s putting pictures out, he’s 190lb.

“Is he planning on stopping by 170? Is he planning on going back to 155? It just depends on the day that you talk to him.”

One thing that Sonnen does know with confidence is that McGregor has the ability to make a fight big regardless of who his opponent is set to be.
