Connor Goldson Rangers penalty call splits pundits as 'dive' spotted amid dramatic VAR intervention in Aberdeen

Rangers late penalty award against Aberdeen has split the pundits as Celtic hero Chris Sutton reckons Connor Goldson "made a meal" of the flashpoint.

James Tavernier rescued a point for the visitors at Pittodrie after Aberdeen looked to be closing in on a win thanks to Bojan Miovski's early goal, after Stefan Gartenmann was punished for a pull on Goldson in the box following VAR intervention. Referee Nick Walsh awarded a spot kick after being sent to the monitor by the team in the VAR room - allowing the Light Blues to swerve Philippe Clement's first defeat as Rangers boss.

And following the post-match debrief, Kris Boyd was firm in his verdict - despite Chris Sutton voicing some concerns over the actions of Goldson on Sky Sports. The former Rangers star was quick off the mark - comparing the incident to a flashpoint earlier in the campaign that saw Hearts punished against the Ibrox side.

During that game, Peter Haring appeared to pull Goldson in the box late on at Ibrox - despite Steven Naismith protesting that John Lundstram had blocked his man from catching the attacker. Boyd said: "It is a penalty kick. We can debate it all day long but in this day and age you can't get involved.

"As soon as you start pulling shirts you run the risk - the same as the one against Hearts. I know they were aggrieved by it and Barry Robson will be, but it's lazy defending. You can't pull somebody's shirt, Chris."

Chris Sutton struggled to argue - but claimed that Goldson had thrown himself to the ground: "No I would agree on that but he doesn't half make a meal of it. He dives." Former Dons goalkeeper Joe Lewis chimed in as he looked to argue the case for the host: "He goes down after he has let go of his shirt."
