Connor Goldson on brink of Rangers transfer exit as Gio van Bronckhorst admits new contract is unlikely

Connor Goldson looks set to leave Rangers on a free as Gio van Bronckhorst admits a new contract is "unlikely" for the defender.

Goldson has been a key man domestically and in the Europa League run and has racked up more minutes than any other player.

His deal is up at the end of the season though and there has been plenty of speculation Saturday's Scottish Cup Final with Hearts could be his final game.

That looks more likely than ever now as boss Van Bronckhorst admitted at his press conference he isn't likely to stay.

He said: “Regarding Connor, the club has been in talks with him to extend his contract and so far he hasn’t extended it.

“The chance that he will still be a Rangers player after tomorrow will be small. I’d love to have Connor in the team next year but as you see quite a lot when players get out of contract there is two possibilities.

“That is to keep playing for Rangers or to move on to another challenge but I still have in my mind he will still be part of Rangers next year.

“We’ll have to watch in the coming weeks.

“I think Connor has been amazing for this team. If it will be his last game tomorrow? I don’t know right now.”

Rangers have John Souttar arriving in the summer but may need further reinforcements with 33-year-old Leon Balogun's deal also up.

18-year-old Leon King may hope for more minutes at the heart of a new-look defence under the Dutchman next season.
