Congestion in Manchester city centre as roads close for cycling race - live updates

Drivers are facing delays in Manchester city centre this afternoon due to numerous road closures in place across town. Many of the closures are down to the Tour Series Grand Final cycling race.

It is the second day in a row that Deansgate has been shut off to motor traffic, after Manchester City held an open-top bus parade down the avenue yesterday to celebrate their Premier League title win.

The council has previously apologised for the disruption the event has caused, but says the closures are necessary 'to ensure the safety of cyclists and event staff'.

Some commuters who have contacted the Manchester Evening News to say they are unable to leave work in their cars due to the closures. Other leisure institutions, like the Opera House, are advising concert-goers to arrive early. Transport for Greater Manchester has been contacted for comment.

Traffic monitoring service Inrix is advising more details of the main closure. It says: "A56 Deansgate in both directions closed due to Cycling Tour Final sports event between A6143 Liverpool Road and A34 Bridge Street. Liverpool Road, Quay Street and Peter Street are also closed."
