Concern about level of River Ely in Cardiff as it starts to hit road bridge

Streets around a river in a Cardiff neighbourhood have been flooded as water levels rise. Natural Resources Wales issued a flood warning for the River Ely at Ely Bridge on Thursday afternoon and much of the surrounding area is already waterlogged.

The industrial estate near the bridge is flooded while a large area of the pavements and road of the residential Mill Road is underwater. It is not clear if any homes have yet been flooded. Footage of the river from 4.30pm shows fast-flowing water hitting the bridge just under the road level.

The flood warning has been in place since 1.44pm and the river level at Ely Bridge is at 3.254m as of 4.15pm. According to Natural Resources Wales that figure is rising. It is the first flood warning at this spot since March 2020.

It comes as stormy weather causes disruption across Wales including flooding, power cuts, and train delays. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the areas worst-hit by flooding have been Porth and Pontypridd in Rhondda Cynon Taf.
