Cobham 65 Medway 10: Regional 2 South East match report

Medway’s second game of the season ended in disappointment after Cobham pulled clear for a 65-10 win in Regional 2 South East.

The visitors made the better start, taking a third-minute lead through Charlie Wardzynski’s penalty, but two converted scores steadied any nerves the hosts may have had.

Kyle Woollard got Medway’s first - and only - try with Wardzynski’s conversion reducing the gap to just four points, but that was as good as it got for Ricky Reeves’ side.

The head coach said: “Cobham are a very good team who will definitely be challenging for the top slots as the season progresses. For us, this was a disappointing and surprising performance after last week’s success and the scoreline shows that we have some work to do in the week.”

At 14-10 Medway secured the restart and began building again but when they lost possession in contact the ball was hacked forward by Cobham for their impressive full-back to chase down and fall on it over the line.

Five minutes later a knock-on gave Cobham the scrum, all of which were well contested, but the home team secured the ball and with Medway not communicating in defence the Cobham centre made big yards before releasing his winger to score their bonus-point try and end the half 24-10 to the good.

The second half was one-way traffic, with Medway’s John Sipawa receiving a yellow card after he was adjudged to have deliberately knocked on.

The subsequent penalty at that point made it 34-10 and worse was to follow when an attempted Medway offload was intercepted by the Cobham centre for a 39-10 lead. Injuries then saw Medway having to empty their bench while the hosts scored four more tries before the final whistle.

Medway host Gravesend this Saturday.
