Clyde 2 Jeanfield Swifts 0: Perth side's Scottish Cup journey ended at third round stage

Jeanfield Swifts’ special Scottish Cup journey was brought to an end on Friday evening - but the Perth club could and should be proud of their efforts.

Robbie Holden’s men, backed by a wonderful visiting support, were edged out 2-0 by Clyde in the third round of the competition.

Both goals arrived in the second half and both were headers, the first from Liam Scullion before Logan Dunachie wrapped up the win.

Swifts were daring to dream all over again and Chris McLeish fancied his chances early doors.

His volley on the swivel, however, was always going to be safely gathered by goalkeeper Jack Leighfield.

The Perth side was certainly looking the more threatening and soon Fraser Smith curled a free-kick over the bar from a promising position.

On 16 minutes, he turned architect to deliver a delightful cross to the back post where quick-thinking Jordan Northcott guided into the net. He wheeled off in celebration but the assistant’s flag was up for offside.

Clyde did apply some pressure as the game approached the half hour mark but experienced Swifts shot-stopper Mark Mitchell was alert to deal nicely with a dangerous corner.

Ji Stevenson then tried his luck from a tight angle but the ball fizzed well wide of the mark.

The hosts were starting to enjoy more possession and were inches from taking the lead in the 41st minute when Scullion’s powerful drive rattled the woodwork.

There was time before the break for Scott Smith to curl a free-kick into the arms of Leighfield. It was very much all to play for heading into the second half.

Swifts, now shooting towards their vocal travelling fans, threatened in the 50th minute through Fraser Smith’s low free-kick and then his follow-up which drifted over.
