Chris Sutton in reluctant Celtic brag as rapid Rangers strike comes to mind in week of lightning starts

Quick goals have been all the rage during international week.

First, Austria were far too fast for Slovakia on Saturday as Christoph Baumgartner gave them the lead away from home after just SIX seconds, running through from kick-off and slotting to hand the visitors the definition of a perfect start. Then later on the same night, neighbours Germany were just a second slower to register against France.

In an ominous warning to opening Euro 2024 opponents Scotland, Toni Kroos literally wasted no time on his first appearance for Die Mannschaft in three years. The Real Madrid star teed up Florian Wurtz from kick-off to go ahead against the much fancied French with seven seconds on the clock. A combined total of 13 seconds is seriously impressive at any level, and it prompted BBC 5 Live's Monday Night Club to come up with similarly fast starts at club level. Enter Chris Sutton.

The former Celtic striker began his first Old Firm appearance in the hoops like a dream, putting Rangers to the sword inside the first minute back in 2000. Martin O'Neill's side ran riot, hitting their rivals for six to leave Dick Advocaat's Treble winners shell shocked and on the end of a 6-2 August defeat.

Naturally, that was the goal that sprang to mind for Sutton, and he was just as quick to bering it up despite the faux reluctance. He said: "Yeah, I don't like talking about myself. But I scored inside a minute at Ibrox and Celtic Park."
