Chey Dunkley sends message following Sheffield Wednesday return

Following a nightmare spell on the sidelines at Hillsborough, Chey Dunkley has finally returned to action for Sheffield Wednesday to strengthen Darren Moore’s hand going into the final few games of the 2021-22 season.

The towering centre-back was a regular in the first half of the campaign as Wednesday suffered with an injury crisis in their back-line – that was until Dunkley himself was struck down at the end of December.

Dunkley hobbled off in the first half of the Owls’ 5-0 humiliation away at Sunderland with a hamstring injury and for the best part of two months had to recover and wait for a return to the pitch.

That comeback occurred this past weekend when Wednesday made the long trip down to Kent to face struggling Gillingham, and Dunkley played his part from the very start in a back three with Jordan Storey and Sam Hutchinson, keeping a clean sheet in the process.

And Dunkley announced his return to football on social media in fine style with an Instagram post on Wednesday afternoon.

The Verdict

When all of Sheffield Wednesday’s defenders are fully-fit, Darren Moore has a plethora of talent to choose from.

It’s almost an embarrassment of riches at League One level and Dunkley has only added to that this week with his return.

Helping to keep a clean sheet in his first match for nearly three months is a good way of going about things, but he will come up against tougher tests in the coming weeks than Gillingham.

On the flip side of things though, there’s no guarantee that Dunkley will be a starter going forward due to the strength in depth that Moore has – it’s now a real selection headache for the former centre-back himself.
