Leicester City’s £20m boost ahead of summer transfer window

Leicester City have their eyes set on European glory at the end of the season as they prepare for the quarter-final of the inaugural Europa Conference League.

City take on Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in the final eight of the competition with the first leg taking place at the King Power Stadium on April 7. City travel to the Netherlands a week later for the second leg as they aim to make it to the semi-final.

Brendan Rodgers ’ side are among the bookmakers’ favourites to lift the trophy in May after dropping down to the tournament after the Europa League group stages. City finished in third place in Group C, meaning that they dropped into the Europa Conference League.

The club did though earn money from their participation in the group stage of the Europa League, with Swiss Ramble estimating that the competition earnt City around €21m (£17.5m). By making the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League it is estimated that the club have earned an extra €3.1m (£2.5m).

Should City go further in the competition, the prize money will continue to rise. A semi-final place would earn an extra €2m (£1.7m) while winning the competition would see City be rewarded an extra €10m (£8.3m) on top of the prize money that the club have got so far.

It means that winning the competition, along with their participation could earn City a total of €31m (£25.8m) at the end of the season. With Brendan Rodgers talking of a squad refresh in the summer, it’s extra funds that could come in handy ahead of the window opening in just a couple of months’ time.
