Chelsea 'could definitely go in for' £20m star on Deadline Day
Chelsea could make a deadline day move to sign Aston Villa ace Douglas Luiz, according to journalist Simon Phillips.
The Blues have enjoyed a summer spending spree but are still believed to be in the market to sign a centre midfielder before tonight’s 11pm deadline.
According to Sky Sports, Chelsea are in a four-way race to sign the Brazilian, who’s entered the final 12 months of his Villa deal and wants to play in the Champions League.
With that in mind, the Blues hold an advantage over London rivals Arsenal, although Liverpool and Atletico Madrid are also in the running for his signature.
The report claims that one club is expected to make a £20m bid for Luiz, who scored from a corner in Villa’s defeat at Arsenal, his second goal from a direct corner in the space of eight days.
Steven Gerrard spoke after the game and admitted that Luiz’s Villa Park future is up in the air heading into the final hours of the window.
Asked whether he expects him to stay, he said: “I’m not in control of that. That will be Douglas, his agent and what happens around that. I’d like to keep him, he’s a fantastic player. I’ve made that abundantly clear.
“We’re not in a position where we need to lose our top players but at the same time Douglas has got a year to go and it is one of those really touchy situations where the club has to do what is best for the club, even if it is not necessarily best for me.”
He told GIVEMESPORT: “I’ve been told the one to watch out for this morning is Douglas Luiz. We actually reported that first, yesterday on our site, and Chelsea could definitely go in for a move for him.
“He’ll probably be available because I think there’s been an issue with him and Steven Gerrard. So, Luiz is one to keep an eye on for
