Che Adams is Torino hero in shock Atalanta win as Scotland star eyes up Lewis Ferguson's Serie A record

Che Adams opened his account for Torino in a 2-1 victory against Europa League winners Atalanta to help his side continue their strong start to the season.

The Scotland forward ended his five year spell at Southampton earlier this summer to join the Serie A club on a free transfer, and marked his league debut for Torino last week with an assist in a 2-2 draw with AC Milan at San Siro. And the 28-year-old has now netted his first goal for Il Toro as they came from behind to defeat the men from Bergamo.

Atalanta newboy Matteo Retegui had fired the away team into a first half lead only for Serbia international Ivan Ilic to draw level for Torino just after the half hour mark. And Adams - who has scored six times in 33 caps for the Dark Blues and represented his country at two European Championships - bagged what turned out to be the winner four minutes into the second half.

The former Sheffield United and Birmingham City star was the first to react after Atalanta stopper Marco Carnesecchi had palmed his strike partner Duvan Zapata's shot into his path, leaving Adams free to stroke the ball into an empty net. Atalanta squandered a glorious chance to nick a point right at the death after Mario Pasalic failed to convert from the penalty spot in injury time.

The English-born attacker will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of legendary Scot Denis Law, who scored 10 goals in 27 Serie A matches for Torino way back in the 1961/62 season. Law had boasted the record for the most goals scored by a Scot in Italy's top-flight for 61 years, until it was broken by Bologna star Lewis Ferguson last year. The ex Hamilton Accies and Aberdeen midfielder took over Law's mantle with his effort in a 1-0 win against Atalanta in December 2023.
