Chatham Town dismiss Billericay Town’s signing of their former captain Jack Evans and says he remains their player and is on the transfer list

Chatham Town insist that former captain Jack Evans remains their player - three weeks after a rival club announced they’d signed him.

At the end of May, Evans announced he was leaving Chatham, saying “it was time for a new challenge,” and on June 10 Billericay Town unveiled him as their new recruit.

Chatham have now released a statement, however, insisting Evans remains contracted to them and has been put on the transfer list.

Evans, 32, has made close to 200 appearances for Chatham and scored 100 goals.

A Chats statement said: “Following recent developments regarding Jack Evans, we would like to clarify the club’s position.

“Jack remains under contract with Chatham Town Football Club.

“While internal discussions took place about a possible departure, no formal agreement was ever reached, and no release has been granted.

“Contrary to public perception, the club has not sanctioned any move elsewhere, and Jack remains a registered Chatham Town player.

“We recognise Jack’s long service as club captain and his contributions on and off the pitch.

“However, the manner in which this situation has unfolded — including a premature public announcement by another club — has caused avoidable disruption and does not reflect how we conduct business.

“Chatham Town takes pride in dealing with players professionally and respectfully.

“Over the years, we have released countless players by mutual agreement and without issue. This is the first time we’ve had to address a situation of this nature publicly.

“As a result, Jack has now been placed on the transfer list.

“We have made our position clear to all parties involved, and unless the correct processes are followed, Jack will remain a contracted Chatham Town player and will not be
