Celtic transfer routine is about as convincing as Olympic breakdancer but they should bend over backwards to do one thing

Celtic have been about as convincing in the transfer market this summer as that weird Australian breakdancer at the Olympics.

At least the Aussie made some moves, unlike the Hoops, who seem determined to just hover around the edges of the dance floor and pick up a couple of leftover lumbers in the kebab shop before the taxi home. But Parkhead chiefs are not just doing the musical statues routine in the transfer market. They also need to get a move on when it comes to matters already on their doorstep.

Celtic should bend over backwards to get Greg Taylor on a new long-term deal and ensure the full-back doesn’t moonwalk right out of the door. The 26-year-old is now well into the final year of his contract and a deal has yet to be agreed. Taylor gets a raw deal from some at times, which is unfathomable. You get the feeling if he was Slovak or something, his place wouldn’t even be a talking point. His is one of the first names on the team sheet for Brendan Rodgers – and Ange Postecoglou before him – and a huge part of the side’s success.

Taylor’s influence is almost taken for granted, yet so much of Celtic’s play comes through him. His team-mates rave about him. Postecoglou gave him a crash course in the inverted full-back routine and he passed with flying colours. It’s no surprise Rodgers has him doing something similar.

He can now go on the outside or tuck in to bolster the midfield and even pops up in the inside-left channel – like he did when teeing up Reo Hatate for the opener last weekend. Most sensible fans recognise it. They know this guy is Mr Reliable and break out in cold sweats at the thought of him getting a sore knee – which doesn’t happen very often.
