Celtic starlet receives 'shining star' praise from Albanian president after goal on Austria tour

Albanian president Ilir Meta has hailed Rocco Vata after the youngster netted for the senior Celtic side on their pre-season tour of Austria.

Ange Postecoglou's side kicked off their schedule of friendly matches with a convincing 7-0 success over minnows Wiener Viktoria. Johnny Kenny grabbed two while Christopher Jullien, James Forrest, Reo Hatate and Mikey Johnston all got in on the act. Vata appeared from the bench and netted to round off scoring, displaying potential he has showcased in the Hoops' youth ranks.

His father Rudi spent three years at Parkhead in the 1990s and is an Albanian football legend, holding strong ties with the nation's current leader. Meta said of the Republic of Ireland youth international via Twitter: "Rocco Vata – A shining star. First game for #CelticFC ’s seniors! First goal for #CelticFC ’s seniors! Another of his great success which deserves to be greeted. I wish him the best of luck #Successneverrests."

This isn't the first time Meta has appeared to support the Hoops. He has been spotted in green and white many times since his 2017 appointment to office and has attended matches in Glasgow.

Albania's first Celtic supporters club was also opened by their president in 2020.

Postecoglou's side are next in action against Rapid Wien on Saturday, with Meta no doubt keeping an eye on Vata to see if he can build on his solid start to season 2022/23.
