Celtic crash to calamitous Champions League defeat as TWO sent off on miserable night at Feyenoord – 5 talking points

Celtic lost their heads and their opening Champions League Group E game as Brendan Rodgers watched his NINE men slump to a 2-0 defeat to Dutch champions Feyenoord in Rotterdam.

The Scottish Premiership champions held their own right up until the stroke of half-time when they conceded to Calvin Stengs' free kick. Gustaf Lagerbielke then conceded a penalty and was sent off for a second booking and while Joe Hart saved Igor Paixao’s effort, substitute Odin Thiago Holm was also sent for an early bath just 10 minutes after his introduction and there was no way back as Alireza Jahanbakhsh struck a killer second.

Joe Hart barely had a save to make in the first half with a routine stop from Yankuba Minteh, the Gambian on loan from Newcastle United. Celtic, though, looked dangerous on the break and Maeda launched a quick counter as the Feyenoord defence couldn’t keep pace with him but his final effort was well saved. Celtic survived a VAR check for a potential penalty for handball against Greg Taylor but it never looked in any danger of being a spot kick while Bosnian referee Irfan Peljto flashed yellow cards at Lagerbielke and skipper Callum McGregor for late challenges.

But right on the stroke of half-time came the hammer blow. O’Riley conceded a free kick 30 yards from goal and Stengs was given far too big a gap to aim at as he stepped up to send the ball over the wall and into the net at Joe Hart’s left hand side. If the Englishman had fingers pointed at him for his part in that goal, then he came to the rescue in the second half.
