Carlos Corberan explains Toffolo, Hogg, and Colwill omissions after dramatic Huddersfield Town win

Carlos Corberan used his squad again to make two changes to his starting eleven for the late win against Cardiff. After the game he explained his thinking behind moving Harry Toffolo and Jonathan Hogg to the bench alongside the returning Levi Colwill.

After a momentous effort from the players during Saturday’s win over Fulham Corberan needed to rotate. After the summer and January recruitment he now feels he can make those changes when required.

“It’s important to analyse each game and work out which players we can use to get to the right level,” said Town’s head coach after the 2-1 win on Wednesday night, “Toffolo had to put an enormous effort the other day (against Fulham) to play that game.

“Having a player like Ruffels helps us keep the level because only having one recovery day is sometimes not enough to stay at your highest, and Ruffels can add many things to the team.”

Corberan clarified that Hogg’s omission was for the same reasons, “ Hoggy is exactly the same, he’s one player that it is important to protect at some point because it’s important right now that we want to have the highest number of players we can have available at their highest level for every game.”

Returning to the matchday squad was Chelsea loanee Levi Colwill who absence with injury had been a worry. Town’s defensive options have come to the fore and Corberan recognised that.

“With Colwill, the level that Matty Pearson and Tom Lees are playing at are making it difficult for any centre-back as both are competing at a very high level.”

Town travel to Birmingham this weekend hoping to extend their unbeaten run to seventeen games in all competitions.
