LIVE updates: Oldham road cordoned off after police car slams into barrier in serious crash

A huge police cordon is in place at the scene of a serious collision in Oldham.

Emergency services were scrambled to Ashton Road near Crofton Street this afternoon following a crash that reportedly involved a police car. The road is cordoned off, and vehicles are being asked to avoid the area.

Pictures from the scene show a large emergency services presence, with the road closed in both directions and a police cordon in place.

The exact nature of the incident is currently unknown.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP), Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) and North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) have been contacted for comment.

Eyewitnesses at the scene have described a 'large' emergency services presence with around 'a dozen' police and fire officers attending, and at least three ambulances.

The M.E.N understands the collision happened by the Hollins Road junction, near Ashton Road the Tesco Express. The large police cordon covers several junctions with Ashton Road.

GMFRS have asked drivers to avoid the area, warning of 'heavy traffic'.
