Calvin Ramsay opens up on Liverpool year from hell as Preston star reveals 'most difficult' part of injury torment

Calvin Ramsay is hoping he can put a year from hell behind him and come back stronger for Preston and Liverpool.

Former Aberdeen defender Ramsay threatened to take Anfield by storm in his first six months, arriving from Pittodrie and immediately working his way into the fringes of Jurgen Klopp's side. He played twice for the first-team and earned a senior Scotland debut against Turkey before a horror knee injury forced him onto the sidelines.

He missed the entire second half of last season and was sent out to Preston with a view to racking up senior minutes outside of the Anfield limelight. But his return from injury at Deepdale proved a false dawn; a recurrence of his knee problem meant another long spell on the sidelines and he had to return to Merseyside for treatment before he'd even kicked a ball competitively.

After 12 weeks of rehab back at his parent club, though, he's back and ready to go for Ryan Lowe in the Championship. He came through 45 minutes for the reserves against Accrington Stanley on Tuesday night and now he's targeting a top team debut against Blackburn this Friday night.

Ramsay told the Preston website: “I’m delighted to be back. It’s been a tough year for me with a couple of knee injuries, but this time when I went back to Liverpool for my rehab I made sure I worked harder than ever. I wanted to come back and get a good run in the team hopefully, and try and show what I can do, so I’m delighted to be back and get some minutes today, and I’m ready to go.

“That was probably the most difficult part (returning to Liverpool for treatment) because I was here for only a couple of weeks and I was getting to know the lads, and then suddenly I had to go away again for two or three months.
