Calem Nieuwenhof to Hearts transfer latest as SFA blessing leaves two remaining obstacles for midfielder move

Calem Nieuwenhof has moved a step closer to becoming a Hearts player after the SFA gave their blessing to the midfielder’s move from Western Sydney Wanderers.

The 22-year-old is set to swell the Aussie contingent at Tynecastle after the Jambos had a six-figure bid accepted by the A-League club. He’ll join Socceroos Kye Rowles, Cammy Devlin and Nat Atkinson in Gorgie and become Hearts’ first outfield signing of the summer. SFA chiefs granted the Jambos the required Governing Body Endorsement on Thursday and now they just need a visa and work permit to conclude the deal.

Nieuwenhof shot to prominence in the A-League last season, making 27 appearances and notching four goals. His form won him a call-up to the Australia U23 side ahead of next year’s Olympics and he has since won five caps for the Olyroos. His arrival bolsters Frankie McAvoy’s options in the middle of the park following the departure of Orestis Kiomourtzoglou to Gruether Furth last week.
