Caglar Soyuncu discusses his Leicester City future as contract ticks down

Caglar Soyuncu says he wants to stay in the Premier League as his Leicester City contract ticks towards its final 12 months.

The centre-back, who is now heading away with Turkey ahead of their World Cup play-off against Portugal on Thursday, sees his deal at the King Power Stadium expire in 2023, meaning a decision likely has to be made on his future this summer.

If he does not prolong his stay at City with a new contract, the club may think about selling him to avoid losing a valuable asset for nothing the following summer.

Soyuncu has been a key player for City this season as one of the few defenders who has avoided serious injury, with only James Maddison and Kasper Schmeichel making more appearances. However, despite recent improvements, he has underperformed without Jonny Evans next to him, and his place now seems under threat with Evans and Wesley Fofana fit again.

Coming to a potential juncture in his career, Soyuncu has said he wants to stay in the Premier League, where he is happy to be playing, and hopes to be a leading example of young Turkish players coming over to play in the division.

He told Tivibu Spor: “Our performance as a team has not been at the desired level this season. We’ve had a good period as a team in the past one-and-a-half months. Everything is going well right now. I'm happy to be playing.

“I am happy to play in the Premier League. I want to stay in England as long as I can. My contract continues.

“It's very nice to play with top level players. I can be a better example to the young people after me, I can help more. I am getting good experiences. I want to pass this on to future generations in the coming years.”
