Burnley 1-2 Cardiff City: Bluebirds claim Premier League scalp as they advance to Carabao Cup fourth round
Cardiff City stunned Premier League Burnley as they dumped the Clarets out of the Carabao Cup with a 2-1 win to reach the fourth round.
First-half goals from Joel Colwill and Callum Robinson set Brian Barry-Murphy’s side on their way before a resolute defensive effort in the second half sealed an excellent result.
The Bluebirds were ruthless in front of goal before the break and showed real character afterwards, surviving a Burnley fightback after Zian Flemming halved the deficit.
After the first defeat of the campaign against Bradford City on the weekend, this performance - and result - was the perfect way to bounce straight back in style.
It was another statement display from Barry-Murphy’s men, who have already seen off Swindon and Cheltenham in the competition and now add the scalp of top-flight Burnley. With energy, organisation and no shortage of quality, Cardiff booked their place in the fourth round and sent their travelling fans home dreaming of a cup run.
The Bluebirds started brightly, pressing high and unsettling Scott Parker’s team. Within minutes, Robinson had tested the home defence with an effort from distance, while Rubin Colwill and Isaak Davies both found joy in advanced areas as Cardiff seized the early initiative.
Burnley struggled to settle, with the visitors dominating possession and forcing errors in midfield.
Cardiff’s pressure eventually told on the half-hour mark. A corner was only half-cleared before Perry Ng lofted the ball back into the danger zone. Will Fish flicked it on, Calum Chambers showed great determination to keep it alive, and Joel Colwill was on hand at the back post to tap in from close range and give the Bluebirds a deserved advantage.
