Bruno Lage gets his Wolves wish as brutal Nuno comments emerge

The Premier League is set to allow managers to make five substitutes per match from next season.

The rule was originally introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic following a three-month break in fixtures in 2019/20. But it was scrapped the following season and hasn’t been reinstated, despite calls from several high-profile managers.

Wolverhampton Wanderers boss at the time, Nuno Espirito Santo, was against the idea as he felt it gave the teams with larger squads an advantage. But current Wolves chief Bruno Lage is in favour of the rule change, with five substitutes already being used in all of Europe’s other major leagues.

The vast majority of Premier League clubs were previously against the idea but, according to The Times, it is set to be reintroduced at a meeting today. The Professional Footballers Association has been one of the main drivers behind the U-turn.

Speaking in Doha before the FIFA Congress, PFA chief executive Maheta Molango said: “Our position is quite clear. It is a situation that should never have been a debate in the first place because it’s a player welfare issue.

“In the global market if all the other leagues have five subs and we have three that means we will be in a worse position when it comes to the big games. We want need to start thinking more collectively and think that if our teams are thriving in Europe that is a good thing.”

Bruno Lage plans to change Wolverhampton Wanderers’ formation after sticking with a 3-4-3 system for most of this season.

Lage was expected to move away from Nuno Espirito Santo’s three-at-the-back system after replacing his compatriot in the summer. At previous club Benfica, Lage used 4-3-3 and 4-4-2
