Bruno Fernandes would be better in a 'top team' with Manchester United teammates blamed

Ally McCoist believes Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is being let down by his teammates - as the Scotland icon claims he is being "dragged down".

The 29-year-old was on target during Monday's FA Cup third round win over Wigan Athletic. The Portugal midfielder was brought down in the box and dusted himself down to convert the penalty in their 2-0 triumph.

Fernandes has six goals and five assists in all competitions, netting three times in 19 Premier League appearances, in a difficult season for Erik ten Hag's side. United sit eighth in the table, eight points off the European places and nine away from the top four.

Amid the struggles at Old Trafford, McCoist highlighted Fernandes as one of the standout performers but claims the rest of the squad have to raise their stands.

"I’m not happy with all the hands up and stuff but I’ve watched him closely and he’s probably been their best player but you got to take into account United haven’t been good," he told talkSPORT.

"I actually think, I think he would be a top player in a top team.

"I think he’s been, dare I say it, dragged down a little bit," he added. "I thought the penalty was embarrassing the other night I’ve got to say.

"But I just think the surroundings and everything that has gone on around him has maybe brought him down a little bit. I think he would be the last one out of the United team that I’ve watched that you’d point a finger at."
