Bruno Fernandes set to sign new Manchester United contract

Bruno Fernandes is set to sign a new five-year contract at Manchester United as the club seek to reward him for his performances since joining from Sporting Lisbon.

The playmaker had three years remaining on his existing deal and the option of a further year but United have been holding talks with his representatives for a while and they have been increasingly positive of late, with both sides encouraged by the developments.

There will be no announcement of a new deal while Fernandes is away on international duty but official confirmation of the contract extension could come in the next few weeks.

Fernandes joined United in January 2020 on a deal worth an initial £47million and he made an immediate impact at Old Trafford, helping to propel the club back into the Champions League the following season.

His form has suffered this season, but he's not been alone in that regard at United, and he remains a key part of the club's future, hence the desire to tie him down to a long-term contract.

Fernandes has scored 49 goals and registered 40 assists in 117 appearances for United and his new deal will make him an integral part of the club ahead of the appointment of a new manager this summer.

He is currently away on international duty with Portugal, playing 80 minutes in the World Cup play-off victory against Turkey last night, with Diogo Dalot and Cristiano Ronaldo also starting that game.

Portugal now face North Macedonia on Sunday for a spot in the World Cup in Qatar later this year. North Macedonia stunned Italy on Thursday to reach the play-off final.
