Gary Neville predicts imminent announcement of new Manchester United manager

Former club captain Gary Neville believes Manchester United could appoint their new manager as soon as this coming week.

He made the admission following United's disappointing 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Saturday evening. After falling behind to a brilliant header from Kelechi Iheanacho, the Reds responded almost immediately through Fred's fourth goal of the campaign.

The Brazilian was quickest to react to Kasper Schmeichel parrying Bruno Fernandes' effort and tucked the ball away to bring Ralf Rangnick's side level within three minutes of falling behind. It was the ideal response and gave them a platform to try and build upon.

However, that was as good as it got for United, with Leicester later seeing what they thought was a winner from James Maddison ruled out by VAR. Although United had recovered from a goal down to earn a point, it was another poor performance at Old Trafford, leaving their top-four hopes hanging by a thread.

Through all the doom and gloom, however, there is a feeling that the club is moving in the right direction towards appointing a new manager following Erik ten Hag's recent interview. And Neville, although he admits he could be wrong, believes an announcement could be made in the very near future.

Neville told Sky Sports : "Because the interview process started publicly seven or ten days ago, I said that you have got to conclude it quite quickly because it could become a bit of a mess. There were already reports earlier in the week that Ten Hag was awaiting details as to whether he would be offered a contract or not.

"I suspect after that performance today, what we will see is a PR spike this week in an approach where the new manager might be named. I don't know, but, for me, it would not
