Bruno Fernandes explains Manchester United game plan after defeat vs Bayern Munich

Captain Bruno Fernandes said Manchester United travelled to the Allianz Arena to face Bayern Munich on Wednesday night with the intention dominating the game.

The Reds fell to their third successive defeat in all competitions, losing 4-3 in a pulsating contest in Germany. They found themselves 2-0 down by half-time before Rasmus Hojlund netted his first goal for the club to provide a glimmer of hope.

However Bayern, who are one of the favourites to win the UEFA Champions League this season, restored their two-goal cushion just four minutes later thanks to a Harry Kane penalty. Casemiro then scored two late goals either side of a smart finish from Mathys Tel, to give the scoreline a more respectable look.

United's performance, just as several have been so far this season, featured the good and the bad of Erik ten Hag's side, with the Reds starting the game the brighter before falling behind to Leroy Sane's opener shortly before the half-hour mark. And Fernandes knew they faced an uphill struggle once they allowed Bayern to get their noses in front.

Fernandes said: "We wanted to be dominant, and we wanted to be on the ball. We knew that Bayern were going to press high in the first few minutes because when they play at home it is always like this.

"We tried to keep on the ball and find the spaces where we could have hurt them. We had a big chance at the beginning where we could have gone 1-0 [ahead] and we didn't score.

"After, Bayern had their chance and scored. Obviously, it is always difficult coming from behind against Bayern. You know how tough and strong they are.
