Broxburn Athletic stun Albion Rovers and Cumbernauld Colts to bury derby demons

Broxburn boss Stevie Pittman praised his players for racking up back-to-back wins over established Lowland League sides to bury the demons of their derby defeat to Linlithgow Rose last week.

The Albyn Park outfit were left licking their wounds after a 6-2 humbling at the hands of their West Lothian rivals, but Brox came up with the perfect response by sinking Albion Rovers at Cliftonhill last midweek and then defeating Cumbernauld Colts at home on Saturday, both by 3-0 scorelines.

An Errol Douglas double and a Lewis Turner strike did the damage in Coatbridge before Douglas bagged a brace again on Saturday alongside a Nicky Locke goal.

Those results have lifted Lowland newcomers Brox up to sixth in the table, three points clear of Linlithgow in eighth, and one point off of joint leaders Celtic B and Caledonian Braves.

And proud Pittman said: “The boys have been excellent since the Linlithgow Rose game. We were fantastic against Albion Rovers last midweek and again there against Cumbernauld on Saturday.

“It was a game of two halves with the wind that we had to contend with. Each half, the players adjusted and they changed their game to combat the conditions – playing into the wind and against it – so I was really happy with them.

“We had to change the system with [striker] Gary Brass being out injured long-term and every one of the boys have been fantastic, which really made up for the loss to Linlithgow last weekend.

“That was the response we wanted but I do put a bit of the blame for that result on myself. I put it down to the formation I played in that game but we learn from our mistakes.
